Not enough passion

Without passion you’ll only ever get mediocre results. With passion you can achieve almost anything.

If you can’t get passionate about what you’re doing, go and do something else instead.

Business owners often talk about their work as if it’s a labour of love. Of course, you want to make a profit and have a successful business, but the success of a small business is measurable in ways that don’t always show up on the balance sheet.

You may have a specific vision for how you want to be of service – you see a problem or inefficiency or a cause of frustration in the market, and you are determined to “fix it” and build something better. Or you may be really good at making or building or designing a certain product.

Being a small business owner is a wonderful way to live, because at its best, running your own business enables you to blend your work and your life into one overarching sense of vision and purpose. The work can be hard and obsessive, the hours can be long and exhausting, but the sense of freedom, passion, and possibility is unlimited – and well worth it.

Without passion, there would be no entrepreneurs. But without a vision, there would be no passion. If you are not passionate about what you are doing, you will not be able to convince your customers that your product or service is the one that they must have.

Even accountants can get passionate about what we do. When they are asked, I don’t want my clients to say that I am OK, I am “average”. But without passion that is all I will ever be – and no one wants to be referred to as an average accountant!

What would your clients or customers say about you?
